ver_jen - You say that you know all about deaf people, but I took ASL in highschool, and I'm taking it now in college, and them being deaf has absolutely NOTHING to do with the amount of money they make. You say I'm rude for this, I think you just have so sense of humor, and also, it's kind of rude to pity someone, and make up excuses for them, because they have a "disability" as some would call it.

As for others that are offended, sorry, I tink it's funny. If you don't, then stop wasting your time lecturing me. I respect deaf people, don't tell me I'm rude, or inconsiderate. I don't need your bullshit. Alright? Good.

Okay; this is kind of a response to the some comment above me who said it was the only way her deaf family member could communicate; My very best friend is deaf, I can sign but if he needs to contact me, he just texts me. no big deal.

& yes, that was funny. lol :]

response to ver_jen:

okay, look hun. Now you have gotten me mad & I don't get mad that easily.

The one thing Lenny (my best friend who is deaf) always say is that he hates people pitying him becuase he is deaf & he hates poeple like you who think they know him because the studied sign language or whatever.

hun, you can take all the classes you want but you will never EVER KNOW THEM! They can't be catagorized into one catagory & that's exactly what your doing. you need to grow up! Stop shaking you degrees in our faces. Stop catagorizing the people you are supposedly standing up for shut up. get on with your life. you don't know them therefore you cannot deffend them. They're not a 'group' their people. just like you and me. wake up.

I grew up using the relay service because my parents are Deaf. So I had to talk through a person who would be using a TTY to communicate to my parents for me, while I was talking to him/her on the phone. Usually these people are not affiliated at all with the Deaf community and probably have no clue about deafness. Talk about awkward... talking to my mom through a male relay operator. I know it's my mom telling me she loves me, even though I'm hearing a strange male's voice telling me it... but it's still funny.

Luckily Video Phones are really getting around. Before I got mine, my Deaf brother would call me through a video relay service interpreter... and I could talk to him as though he was right in front of me, as he was able to use a live interpreter. I didn't have to wait for pauses there. Luckily I have my own video phone now so I can communicate with my Deaf family members using ASL through the video phone and I don't need a middle person.

I am an interpreter for the Deaf and I don't really find that funny. Deaf people have a hard enough time communicating without someone tying up the lines just to get their jollies off!

The people who work those lines don't make that much money either. They do it because they want to give the Deaf the options that hearing people have. Get a life and stop messing with the Relay service.

I am sure it was creepy for him to have to talk to you like that. I have had to interpret some rather embarrassing things, we don't like to do it, but it is part of the job.

As for the person who said they can use text, NOT ALL DEAF CAN AFFORD TEXT! Many of them barely have jobs that pay the rent.

EDIT: you took it in High school... well good for you little girl. I took 4 years in College and got my degree and I have been working with them for at least 17 years. Yes, some of them DO make good money but a LOT of them have been kept down because their parents didn't learn sign language and they had a hard time learning English. Don't even begin to think you know more than me because you took some stupid little sign class in H.S. I attended Madonna University which is one of the top schools to learn Sign Language. I do not pity them, I understand them and until you really have been able to work with many different ones and know more about it, I think you should not speak about what you don't have any clue about!

EDIT: Some deaf have deaf parents which puts them in a better position for a higher earning potential. Some were born deaf because their mothers had rubella and if you knew anything about that, you would also know that Deafness tends to be ONE OF MANY problems they can have because of their deafness. One of my clients who was born deaf because of rubella is blind in one eye, deaf, had kidney problems and also emotional problems. Another group of deaf people have been raised by hearing parents and sometimes those parents were told not to teach their kid sign language. The brain has a certain time when it can most easily learn to process language and that is before the age of 5. Another one of my clients did not have a language at all until she was 8 years old and moved from Greece to America and the School taught her to sign. she still has a hard time processing language. So in many cases, YES- it has a financial impact on the person. Some people born deaf do not ever learn to speak because their voices will not work properly. Some of them can speak but not read lips. There are a LOT more challenges to getting a carrer if you happen to have been born deaf.

EDIT: Also as for my qualifications, I not only studied it but I also lived in a dorm full of deaf people and when I moved into a house off campus, I moved in with 3 deaf people and 2 hard of hearing persons. I think I have a little more experience than you do.

P.S. How can someone so beautiful be so Ugly on the inside?

will i haven't done it yet but my brother is half deaf. what i mean by Half Deaf is that he is not completely deaf. he can hear you when you are close to him and when you are talking loud like yelling and also you can hear him too the same way when he talks sometimes you can hear him too when he talk loud and yeah it kind look suck and sad to see him talk like that, he was born normal like anyone else but he got very sick in Africa and there was no money to take him to the hospital so the ill took effect. so in my family I'm the only one who cares a lot about him because i understand what it feel when people are talking and you can talk with them or you can't hear them. he borough one of the Deaf communicated system and i didn't know how it work but he knows how to use it and it work like a fax machine or like a email and the letter are just like the computer of cash register so it pretty ruff and tough to be in that situation.
