I'm the captain of my J/V team. I'm a fairly decent shooter and I play baseline. I'm expecting a lot this season out of the team and myself. I want to score 15+ points a game, how many shots should I take? Is 16 to much? How can I become a better scorer?
P.S. I'm 6"2, good free throw shooter, avg 10 last season, soph this year

Dear socceral,

As the captain of your team- i think you really set the tone for the rest of the team. It's good to have goals- but if you start out focusing only on your individual goals and having a pre-set number of shots that you think you need to take per game--- imagine if everyone on the team had that mind-set.

I'm sure your coach would agree that you should take good shots when they are available and not force shots. You must be one of the best players on your team to be the Captain so i'm sure your coach and teammates recognize your abilities and you'll get the opportunities but you should set the tone for doing what needs to be done for the team to win first. Team first, individual stats second.

Your coach and teammates will let you know if you're shooting too much.

Different games require different roles. There are games where you might have to focus on being a lock-down defender and you sacrifice a little offense that night, and other games when you have a total mismatch and you can go nuts or draw a double team and end up with a load of assists.

Most high school teams have a system so just play within the system and set the example for your team.

Kindly,

Nickster

Just let the game come to you. Don't force a lot of shots or else you'll be hurting the team. There isn't a specific amount of shots that you should try to take. Just do whatever it takes to help your team win. Kevin Martin is one of the best scorers in the NBA and I've never seen him force a shot. He takes less than 17 shots a game and averages over 25 pts. He's also good at getting to the line and hitting fts.

Well it all depends on your shot % if you play low post and shoot a high shot % u shouldnt need that many shots per game if u play outside you may need quite a few more shots to get over 15+ pts due to the fact you wont be fouled as much..less free throws...whats ur teams avg per game if your wanting to hit 15+ pts a game i would say ur team is averaging 70+ pts unless ur the star!

You should shoot about 15 shoots. You will get 4-8 free throws if you do this. You'll take five 3 and hit 2 of them most likely. So that's six points. You'll take 10 2s and hit 4-6 of them. If you have 8 fts you'll hit 5-7 since you said you're a good free throw shooter. So that's 21-25 pts.

If you have an open shot take it. Don't be a ball hog though. Pass the ball. Let your teamates take some shots. So take it if it's open or if you have a lane drive to the hoop but don't hog the ball. Your the captain so lead the team not a one man show. So just play your game and take your shots. Don't force anything. Trust your teamates.

If you've got an open shot that you know you can make, shoot.
