How old are you?

To really build a career in acting, you'll need to be willing to go wherever you can find a job--for most people, that means that you end up in New York, LA, Chicago, or another theatrical center.

Getting instruction in acting, voice, dance, stage combat, and any other performance skills is something a professional does throughout her career. I've seen videos of Joan Crawford and Ellen Burstyn, long after they had established themselves as top stars, going through master classes and personal tutoring in acting.

But first things first:

If you're college age or younger, then the best plan is to get through a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree program in theatrical performance. To get to that point, you should perform in all the shows you can, work backstage or in house for those you can't get a role in, and read all the plays you can--while getting all those lessons in acting, voice, dance etc. Get through a BFA degree and you'll have the skills and smarts to build a career, if you're persistent.

If you're an adult post-college-age, then you should still act as much as you can and take as many classes as you are able. At some point you need to learn how to locate open auditions in your region (if you move to New York or LA, there are more open auditions) and you go try out in all of them. Get rejected a few dozen times, and eventually you get a break and find a role in a professional production.

After that, you need to find out how to join a union (Actors' Equity, Screen Actors' Guild, American Federation of TV and Radio Artists--they all accept each others' members). Union membership gets you into closed auditions (which are most of the professional ones). At that point, with some experience and a union card, you are ready to approach agents about representation.

Keep in mind that contacts are crucial to the career--keep in touch with people who might help you find parts.

At 13 the first thing you have to do is get your parents to support your idea of being an actor. At 13 you do not have the experience of many leads in many plays, you are exaggerating. You had better see if you can get roles in your school theatre program. YOu start there and do all the speech and drama activities. Then with your parents' help you take professional classes and build a resume, and when you have a good resume, you get a good head shot and when you have that, your parents submit you to agents for representation. This process could take several years. BTW people who tell you that you are wonderful and should be a pro, do not ususally know what they are talking about, but they are being nice. That is the way of the world.

If you desire a rather well reply pass learn the Blair Gowrie booklet on Who Wrote the Bible. It explains how the Bible was once written and constructed over the final 2000 years. A exceptional method to study a bit of historical past and this is a rather exciting learn.
