your local salvation army usually has a list of needy families or even your local church. Or you could have people donate to your favorite charity in your name!

Spreading your good fortune is a great idea, indeed, and you've had suggestions galore to help.
But if someone is still wanting to get you "something" for you to actually open, how about suggesting a mug? By the looks of my nickname, you could guess that I collect mugs, and there is such a variety of them available, in all price ranges, that there is something to choose from for everyone.
Otherwise, if you put together a wish list, be sure to include some subjects/topics/ideas that interest you, not just an "object,"... i.e. "Oh, I love animals! Anything with a dog on it is great!" or... "You KNOW how much I love my crafting! I can never have too many crafting books!" You get the idea.
Have a holly-jolly!

We have a program in our area called the Angel House. It's a place for abused women and children. We have never done the adopt the family thing, but that is a great idea. We usually get a family at the beginning of the school year and buy them school supplies and some new clothes to start the year. The wife will take the mother to get here hair done and do the woman thing. These children really appreciate it and you will never feel better about yourself. It just breaks your heart to hear what wome of these people have gone through in our country in to days society. As far as presents I'm hoping Santa brings me a new outboard motor for the pontoon boat.

What a wonderful person you are.
I am not sure how you do this in U.S.A, but in NZ you can go to Salvation army and they have the network support to help people who need extra help for their families over Xmas they deliver Xmas gifts and groceries to people who need them most.
I take my children to old peoples homes and we pick flowers for the elderly ladies and then they draw pictures for the gentlemen, at first my children didn't understand why we did this but as they got older they got a real BUZZ from the genuine thanks and joy on the faces of the elderly people, but I make sure the elderly folk they visit are able to communicate with the kids.
Xmas is a time to give and not just recieve, so good for you Cheryl
