Simple. IP's are your addresses in the network or the World Wide Web. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide or assign the necessary IP addresses to their clients (thru the clients DNS Servers) and have a list of these IPs. All IPs are unique. So ones a crime has been committed on the web, all the police and FBI have to do is track the IP Address. How? They go to the ISP and ask them who own this certain IP Address in their network. (lets say, my IP is 124.6.113.124) now this IP is unique and is assigned to me. So, once the ISP tells them that it's mine, I'll be caught.
Simple.

The IP address is insufficient, alone, to track an individual to an address. Unless you purchased a dedicated IP address, which is only necessary if you are hosting a website out of your home (or business), the IP address is assigned dynamically. Your IP address will very likely change if you power down your modem and then power it back up (or if the electricity goes out in your neighborhood, you're practically guaranteed to get a different IP address).
However, the IP address does have meanings. Using it, you can tell what ISP carrier the person is using, and what region of the country they are in, and even the closest router to the person. So, depending on the router, there could be 1 to 999 people on it.
Then, using clues in the messages sent on the internet, the Perp usually provides enough personal information to narrow it down from there.

Well it is possible, any body can trace an IP address. But it is not very likely, that sort of police investigation would be for something more serious, like if she was being sexually harassed on line. Even if this girl is 12 you did end the conversation, so you can't be accused of harassment at all. Any serious police investigation would take your hard drive and they'd be able to tell what you had been doing and saying, they'd look for other signs of that sort of activity to build a case. This seems very unlikely to happen but your hard drive would tell the truth if the police were interested. Forget about it, she sounds like a troll.

I suggest this service: http://phonedetectives.co - The best reverse cell phone lookup service.
It's a cheap service that works great! It could be used for a much deeper search. You can use it to get hold of different varieties of background reports, and in addition cell numbers, addresses and names.. you can get unlimited reports... I ran with this because I required to verify more numbers.
You can get the name, other phone number, address history, relatives, and much more about anyone! The completly free reverse phone lookup generally doesn't provide anything interesting. To get interesting information, money will must be paid. The free searches don't provide considerably more than what may be found through the phone directory or personal information and they simply require your email to send spam. The reverse phone detective search tool does work, but you should use just the service that I posted above. The last thing you want to do, is pay for a service and find the numbers you want to lookup are not available in their directory.
The service that I reccomend doesn't have any kind of problem , you won't get any bad surprise! Trust it!
Reverse Phone Lookup area gives you additional access to millions of public records, including:
+ Find out the source of a harassing ("prank") caller
+ Research a number that appeared on your phone bill
+ Locate an old friend from high school or college
+ Research "missed calls" on your caller ID that you don't recognize
+ Verify an address
+ And more...
PhoneDetectives - http://phonedetectives.co
Conduct an instant reverse phone lookup. 100% Confidentail and Instant Results!

every computer has an Ip address, its just like your home address in the sence that every IP is uniqui and every computer on the internet has one. also your address consists of a country, state, town street and box number, an IP address has 4 numbers seporated by dots (192.168.0.1) both addresses are broken down in th esame way, if your internet provider is road runner, and your Ip starts with 76 then that the first step, then they look at the second number tells the which area its in, then the 3rd number, tells them which town or part of town, that last number is then uniqui to your internet account, the know who owns the internet account and therefore can find you

Most people connect to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP). The subscriber's IP address is assigned by the ISP from a block of addresses assigned to the ISP. The assignment is logged by the ISP. The block of addresses belonging to the ISP is public information, so the ISP can be identified from the IP address. Law enforcement can subpoena the log from the ISP and determine to whom the address was assigned at a particular time.

The IP address links them to your internet service provider. I guess the service provider keeps track of its IP addresses. I think I saw it on Discovery; a show about some teen hacker from Canada.

An IP contains a geological location. They can also see which ISP is providing for the IP address. So my guess is they can check the ISP's customer records to find out.
