Direct variation is when the dependent variable y increases as x increases. So y = 3x is an equation of direct variation. As x gets larger so does y by a factor of 3

Indirect variation is when the dependent variable y decreases as x increases, So y = 3/x is an equation of inverse variation since as x gets larger y or 3/x gets smaller.

Distance varies directly as speed. The faster you travel the greater distance you cover.

Gas volume decreases or varies inversley with pressure. As you push down on a bicycle pump the increasing pressure causes the volume of air in the pump to become smaller.
