The gas supply valve might be turned off. Turn it on first. Then you need to press the pilot light button to get it sparking. Once you got the flame going you need to control how much gas is flowing into the heater. Read the manual. I always have a difficult time turning on the gas fireplace at my house and need a guy to turn it on. LOL.

Near the bottom of the unit, there should be a rectangular metal box with an indicator knob on top. If it is set on "Pilot", depress the knob for 30-60seconds, then turn the knob to the "Operate" or run position. This allows the pilot light to ignite the burner(s) for heat. If the pilot light was turned off, it will have to be relit physically. If you have any doubts at all, call a heating company for someone to relight the pilot.

Look for the control knob or thermostat switch. But, if you are not sure, and have time, call the local energy provider to have it safety-checked first. especially if you think it a gas wall furnace. It never hurts to be safe.
