No all that happens is that the Xbox freezes or it won't turn on.

What happens in RRoD is that some hardware component fails. This is usually soder that melts, shorts out the circuits because of overheating. And as for rare.....Please if it was rare, you would not know about it...33%..? Is that rare, **** no! Get a PS3

As for part of your question, if your asking what i think your asking, when your xbox 360 gets the ring of death(rare) it means it has already broken and thats microsofts way of telling you it needs to be repaired. I don't know about "popping".

wrap it in a warm blanket and overheat it because the 360 tries to repair its self when it over heats
