The grey plastic stem on the inside of the toilet that attaches to the handle that you use to flush the toilet broke. Now I can't flush the toilet by the handle. I have to open the top and pull the grey stem up to flush it. What is this part called and what will I need and have to do to fix my toilet??

The part is called a toilet lever. you need to unhook the chain attached to the lever. there is a lock you need to unscrew on the inside of the tank directly behind the handle. You can sometimes do this by hand, or you may need pliers. You really don't even have to turn the water off to the toilet, unless you want to replace the chain and flapper. Just bring the whole part to any plumbing supply store or home depot for a similar part.

Good luck

Ugh! I am having the same problem! I went to the hardware store, bought a new handle (with the plastic arm attached) and a chain (mine was nowhere to be found) and I have spent the last half hour trying to figure out how it goes back together. I have the handle and the arm through the hole, and the chain linking the end of the plastic arm to the loop on top of the little plunger thingy, but no success. I must be doing something wrong. The instructions don't help. I didn't even know I needed a chain until I was all the way back home, and then I had to go back to the store. Help! If I could see someone else's toilet and how it works, I'm sure I could fix mine. Anyone know of a website with pictures of the innards of a toilet?

You can buy them at Lowe's or Home Depot, they come with the handle attached as one piece and they're very inexpensive. The one you have will unscrew just inside the tank where the handle is. Be sure to take it and the grey piece with you so they can tell what length and what angle yours has. They make several different kinds with different lengths and different angles and if you don't get the right one it won't fit right or work right. You should also find out the brand name of your toilet too.

The part you are looking for is often called the trip lever. Remove the old one from your toilet. The nut holding the flush handle may be clock wise. Take it to your local Menards, Home Depot, Lowes etc. and they will help you find a match. You can do it! Dr. D.

You need a whole new handle. It comes with the lever installed on it. The handle is held on by a nut inside the tank. Most are left-handed threads so turn it the opposite way you think it should turn.
