Intel and Atheros wireless cards work well under Linux (I've got an IPW3945) and some others are known to work.

You can find out which works using Google.

To connect to a secured network wpa_supplicant is the tool to use, it can handle pretty much anything.

Ubuntu 7.10 is known to work out of the obx with many wireless adapters. Try the live cd mode before installing it.

If it fails, try the Knoppix live cd/dvd. If Knoppix couldn't get the wireless adapter working, your wireless adapter is going to take a bit of work and assistance from experienced Linux users.
