It's been done. LB Johnson as Representative, The senior Gore as Tennessee Senator, etc. Usually this is done by organized crime and involves mainly vote fraud.

It does take tons of money, though to win any federal election. That is one good reason that Presidents only come from the "elite" class and elections have been won with dirty money (for instance, Joe Kennedy made his fortune running drugs and weapons during the prohibition and passed that on to his sons who use their entrenched blood money to get and keep power).

Kennedy bought his way into office using money contributed by his father. It's been done more than once. It's not necessarily how much money it takes, but where it comes from. If you can get something like the pharmaceutical industry in your pocket, then you can pretty much have what you want.

I don't know why not. Kennedy was assassinated wasn't he? I don't think it is totally about buying, more like getting paid after. Look at the benefits that Bush and Cheney will get for how they performed. Oil millionaires and government contractors have made out with this pair, and I am sure the cup has run over.
