Where were you guys in '97 I thought he had run the 500 HE DID.
Tony was poised to improve his Indy Racing League (IRL) standing in 1997, but struggled with finishing at times. He failed to finish the first three races of a ten race schedule, but recovered to finish second at Phoenix. At that year's Indy 500, Stewart had a good enough car to win his first IRL race, leading 64 laps. However, he trailed off near the end of the race and settled for 5th. Tony finally got his first career win at Pikes Peak, where he led all but seven laps of a 200 lap race. He became the leading contender for the series' championship after a bad slump knocked points leader Davey Hamilton out of first place. Despite an average end to his season, finishing 7th, 14th, and 11th, and five DNFs, Stewart did just enough to beat Hamilton for the IRL title.

Only if it begins at eleven o'clock again. Then only would he consider it. Very doubtful, though, as he is committed to his ride at Gibbs, and Home Depot (for now). The damn shame is he would much rather win the Indy 500 than the Brickyard 400. He's probably still thinking about all of this. Maybe he'll be back one year. It just won't be 2008.

actual! i might choose to work out him win the 5 hundred and he has suggested that's on his record. He could want tochronic for his (and mine) adolescence hero, AJ. the terrific element approximately Indy qualifying the previous few years grew to become into while Tony confirmed up and anybody concept he grew to become into going tochronic. Too undesirable Tony George, Brian France, and the Bruton-Humpy gang won't be able to artwork out a fashion for drivers to do the double. The years that the adult men did it and a few have been accompanied with cameras added some activity/excirement. to no longer point out that some strictly-NASCAR followers could desire to song in to the 5 hundred while suitable now they could no longer care much less. Tony George desires to realize that his race will in no way have the charm it as quickly as did and changing the start time to "compete" with NASCAR has no longer helped. He could desire to choose to contemplate going "previous college" and race the 5 hundred ON Memorial Day. (and jointly as he's at it, get a action picture star to start the sphere [sorry, yet Mari H-G desires a makeover relatively undesirable! :)])

With the sponsorship dollars and need to focus on his NASCAR season, Stewart - or other open-wheel racers in NASCAR - will not be in the Indy 500 anytime soon. Tony George can't bring anything to the table to have sponsors in the dominant series allow Stewart or other top drivers compete in the Indy 500.

I wish, if they could make the Indy 500 1 hr earlier we could have several guys doing the double duty that would be great..Tony, Dario, Sam it would be awesome...Hey Indiana 500 committee who ever you are look at this please..they could do the Indy 500 and hop in their private jets and come down to Lowes for the 600...Tony has done this in the past and so has Robbie Gordon....it would be cooooool..

I highly doubt it, with the time of the 500 start there is very little time to make the transition to Charlotte for the 600. plus a few years ago he was going to qualify AJ Foyts car and there were "sponsorship" issues that had to be resolved. Next year he runs Toyota in Cup I highly doubt Toyoda will allow him to run a Honda in IRL.

Maybe when he is done in Nascar? Letterman/Rahal could have greatness:) 2 races are maybe a safety issue. He'd be fabulous for the IRL

I agree that Stewart probably couldn't fit into an Indy car in his current shape.

Although I would love to see it, I don't see it as possible. The times just don't work out. There isn't sufficient time to get between the two venues.
