If ants have built a nest in your houseplant, the simpleist solution is to take the plant out of the pot and discard the soil, wash off the roots in plain water, and repot in new soil. No more nest, no more ants.

Put some boric acid and sugar together with a little water in the bottom of a can lid you were getting ready to throw away. Place the lid on the topsoil or near the base and cover it lightly with foil so other animals in the house do not eat it. If the ants are around it when you set it down - they will be gone in 48 hours.

Assuming your houseplant is in a pot, place it in bucket and fill the bucket with enough water to cover the top of the pot.
Let it set under water for a few hours. Take it out of the bucket and let the water drain out of the pot.
Ants cannot hold their breath forever and you used no chemicals at all. And your plant got a good, deep watering.

Sprinke flour or corn starch on and around the plant. Borax works well at stopping ants but I think it's toxic to kids and pets.

I Am is correct. When the pot has drained after soaking, put it in a different location than it was originally . . . ants outside the pot will return if you put it back in the same place. Pheremone trail home. Vinegar windex sprayed on ants will kill them and cancel the pheremone trails they leave.

** Hello. I'm a Certified Master Gardener. **
Put your potted plants in 3/4 sink of water. Keep scooping water onto the potting soil. Let the pot infested with ants sit in the water for 2 hours. This will effectively drown the adult and juvenile ants, and drown their larvae in the soil.
This method works equally well for soil-borne gnats.
Ants on the plant can simply be sprayed with water until they slide down into the sink of water.
I hope this organic solution helps.

Use Dawn or any other liquid dish washing soap, water vinegar and baking soda.
Use about one tablespoon per 16 fl. oz. of water, add one tablespoon of vinegar and one of baking soda in a spray bottle and spray on the plants, this kills the ants and keeps the rest away and it does not harm your plants.

Put the air conditioning on the coldest level, it will kill the ants and also works on flys. I'd reccommend a bug spray.
