hey everyone i gotta 97 hilux 2.4 petrol. it all started when the head blew i got that done. but still found problem with coolant being pushed into overflow tank and gurgling sound after engine turned off. there was no change on temp gage but coolant was not sucking back into radiator. so i changed the thermostat and radiator which was shot. done a head test but came back ok and problem with coolant still arises. if the head wasnt done properly should the mechanic have to re do under insurance or am i screwed. i would be very appreciative if any one could give me any hints or comments what to do thanks

You could have something as severe as a crack in the block, but if your head check came out ok, then it could be your heater core

There may be an air pocket in the cylinder head yet. Try running the motor with the car raised in the front with the cap off the radiator or the reservoir if it's a pressurized tank. The motor has to come up to operating temp. Rev the motor to 2,000 to 3,000 rpm a few times,up and down, to try and move the air pocket.Turn the motor off and let it sit a few minutes to settle down. Watch the coolant level in the radiator neck and see if it pulsates up and down. If it does there is still an air pocket in the system. Repeat the procedure until no pulsation is seen.
Most head gasket repairs should be covered for 12,000 miles or one year, which ever comes first.

If the coolant is not circulating, I would check
make sure of two things.
1) was the thermo(stat) installed the right way in the right direction?
2) see if your water pump is faulty.
Is the coolant still clean after replacing stat and radiator?
To check water pump:
when car is cold, remove radiator cap. Now go and start the car and let it warm up to operating temp., with you heat on hot & fan on high. When the stat reaches operating temperature the stat will open and the coolant will begin to circulate through your motor. If all is well.
Could the stat have been installed upside down????
Is your water pump not working?
What is your temp gauge reading?
Is the heat blowing hot?

One way to approach this is to make sure that the mechanic put the exact same head gasket between the head and engine block that this vehicle requires. If you have a gasket that is just the slightest bit off when trying to align coolant and oil holes you'll play real hell trying to get things to work as designed to. I also hope that the engine block and the engine head are flush or true. If there are machining or lathing issues this can make it almost impossible to try and correct your problem.

In some cars you have to bleed the air out of the system after draining and refilling. The gurgling noise that you heard may have been the air moving through the system.
