I am 19 weeks pregnant. I know I am not supposed to take ibuprofen in pregnancy, but would it do any harm if I only took one? I have nothing else in the house, I will buy some tylenol tomorrow. I can't take the pain anymore, it is horrible.

My husband will be at work till 1 AM and I can't go out since my older son is sleeping upstairs. What could happen if I only took one pill? I am too far along to cause any birth defects on my baby, right?

There are some excellent answers here, but I would like to add a comment or two which may be of help to you. You can take an anti inflammatory such as Advil or Motrin at a 600-800mg dose, in between doses of your pain medication. It will help to prolong the effects of your pain medication and also work to reduce your inflammation and swelling. You just don't want to take "too much" of the Ibuprofen and watch that any other medications taken don't contain this ingredient. You can also rinse with warm salt water, it may offer some relief from the pain. As for the symptoms you stated, this doesn't sound like a simple dental problem and should be taken seriously as any infection should. This sounds like an abscessed tooth but can only be diagnosed with an exam and x ray preformed by your dentist. Any "swelling" is an indication that there is inflammation and inflammation usually precedes or is caused by the infection. A dental infection can only be treated with the appropriate antibiotics and which one given will be determined by your dentist. Don't take this lightly, because this infection will running it's coarse through your blood stream, throughout your body. In most cases an infection with swelling is usually caused by an abscessed tooth. We’ve discussed how to address the symptoms now you will want to decide what to do to fix the problem. It may be possible that this tooth can be saved with a root canal procedure and crown, which can cost upward $1,400.00. Your other choice would be to have it extracted, usually under $200.00 for simple extractions. But which choice is really better for you in the long run? Don't rush into having an extraction with blinders on or without considering the options of replacing this tooth with a bridge, implant or partial, all of which can be more expensive than restoring the original tooth. In most cases you will need to replace the tooth to prevent further dental problems from arising. Ask your dentist, he will be more than happy to discuss all of the options available for you, your dental health and your situation. There are dentist that can help you by arranging payment plans or doing the procedures in steps which will offer any where from a few weeks to several months to pay for each portion of the procedure and also have the needed dental care. But first things first, you need to address the current infection. A dentist may be able to buy you some time by treating this with antibiotics and pain medication for a few weeks, offering you some time and yet taking care of the infection too. If you don’t have a dentist, call around or ask friends or relatives for a referral to their dentist. What ever you decide to do about this tooth, be it a root canal or extraction, take care of the current infection immediately by seeing a dentist or the ER as soon as possible. If this is an abscessed tooth, the pain will only get worse as the infection builds. Good luck with your pending procedures.

Ibuprofen is simply a blood thinner, i'm almost sure you would be okay, however,
1. I'm not a doctor, and have no pharmaceuitcal experience/
2. If it would do harm to a fetus, it would say so on the bottle.

If you're really dying, just call your local pharmacy or hospital, they won't charge you to answer a simple question like that.

Call your doctor, but if that's ALL you have right now and you don't overdose it, it may not hurt. I know a friend of mine was told at 15 weeks that she was allowed to take ibuprofen.

BUT I would question that if your toothache is THAT bad why you wouldn't be jumping at the gun to get Tylenol.

No, you're not too far along to cause birth defects. Otherwise, why not just go smoke and get drunk? If you know you're not supposed to take it, then don't.

Put ice on it for now, or alternate heat and ice. Ask your husband to pick up some Tylenol on his way home.

I agree with everyone else. I'm a mother of 2 and Tylenol is it, if you have to have a pain reliever. Try some topical tooth ache pain reliever - origel - until you can go to the dentist. I would not do the salt water due to toximia.

Look in the cup boards for whole cloves. Put it on the tooth that hurts and hold it there with your teeth.

Put a warm pack on it and lay down for a while.

Rinse with warm salt-water.

Keep still, moving around increases heart-beat and the throb of the pain. Lay still and quiet until you feel a little better.

Think of the tooth as being its own entity and say things like "poor toothy" " oh, poor ouchy toothy" separate yourself from the tooth, give it an identity of its own and your mind will give you relief.

Good luck sweet u new mummy 2 b!

My doctor told me that Ibuprofen can harm the baby. He said, I know it works for pain, but don't take it while pregnant.
You can take Tylenol and use Orajel.
