No. At McDonalds, a Quarter-Pounder with Cheese has 510 calories, and large fries have 570 calories. A regular large soda, however, has 310 calories. A diet soda has 0 calories, so it cuts out 310 calories to choose this. That is a significant difference, but it isn't the most caloric thing in that meal. However, there really isn't a zero-calorie equal substitute for a cheeseburger.
Also remember that some people just enjoy diet soda more than regular. I know that regular soda is usually too sweet for me.

One rationale that I can think of for doing that would be to avoid all of the sugar in regular soda. All that sugar can give you a sugar high/low which is not pleasant.
The other reason is that by ordering the diet soda, the person is avoiding many calories. So ordering that meal with a diet soda is cutting calories as opposed to ordering a regular soda. Cutting calories just like taking in calories over time will result in a weight loss or weight gain.

A cheese burger has 300 calories
Large fries has around 450 calories
and a regular 20mL of soda (not diet) is 280 calories
They probably are having a free (eat whatever you want) day in their diet. But are still wanting to cut whatever calories they can while enjoying the same thing.

I think people do this to feel like they're being healthy- which is, in fact, not true.
Soda doesn't have the "most" calories necessarily, but it definitely adds a significant amount of calories and sugar to any meal. A diet soda may have zero calories (or very few calories), but to make up for the lack of taste, they use artificial sweeteners (chemicals) that are unnatural and may cause serious health defects over time. Either way drinking soda, though it may taste good, is not beneficial for one's health. Water is the best option always- or green tea.

I don't think so. I mean, people wouldn't get a fattening meal and then get an even more fattening drink to add on top of it on purpose. The reason for this is that people think they are saving themselves by ordering a low calorie drink so it will even the meal out. WRONG! That soda may not have as many calories but it contains more fat than a classic coke, and also causes diseases. Many people should know this so please spread it on. Cancer has been formed because of too much intake of diet soda =( God bless those people <3 <3 <3

Some people just prefer the taste of diet over regular soda. Most diet soda has zero calories, so no, it doesn't have the 'most' calories like you said. But it's not very good for you.

Regular soda has about 180-200 calories per 12 ounces so even a giant 32 oz drink only has about 525 calories. A big burger & fries has about 1000 calories.

I enjoy diet soda better than the regular, so thats what I do.
Besides if you going to get that, atleast cut off a LITTLE of the calories by getting the diet soda instaed of the regular.

Haha, I do this. I order a fish sandwich with extra cheese, and large fries, AND a Diet Pepsi. But the reason for me is because I like the taste of Diet Pepsi better than any other pop. I think it is because my parents always had Diet Pepsi in the house, so it was an acquired taste.
It is funny how many people think it is because they are trying to 'cancel out' calories. For most people it is just because they prefer the taste...
