*eliminate parenthesis...
First: use the Foil Method
(2y)(y)+(2y)(-4)+(3)(y)+(3)(-4)
2y^2 + (-8y) + 3y + (-12)
2y^2 - 8y + 3y - 12
Sec: combine "like" terms (terms with the same variable/letter).
2y^2 - 5y - 12

(2y+3)(y-4) ... Start with the given expression
Remember, when you FOIL an expression, you follow this procedure:
Multiply the First terms: (2y)*(y)=2y^2
Multiply the Outer terms: (2y)*(-4)=-8y
Multiply the Inner terms: (3)*(y)=3y
Multiply the Last terms: (3)*(-4)=-12
2y^2-8y+3y-12 ... Now collect every term to make a single expression
2y^2-5y-12 ... Now combine like terms
---------------------
Answer:
So (2y+3)(y-4) ... foils and simplifies to 2y^2-5y-12 ...
In other words, (2y+3)(y-4)=2y^2-5y-12
Notice how 2y^2-5y-12 factors back to the original expression (2y+3)(y-4). So this verifies our answer.

Learn FOIL
first 2y * y = 2y^2
out 2y * (-4) = -8y
in 3 * y = 3y
Last 3 * (-4) = -12
usually you can simply the middle two -8y + 3y = -5y
(2y+3)(y-4) = 2y^2 -5y - 12

(2y + 3)(y - 4)
2y^2 - 5y -12
...you should probably know how to do this.
EDIT:
I'm wasn't trying to mean when I said that. I was just saying that this is a very important proccess in Algebra and Algebra 2 and you will see it A LOT for the next few years.

FOIL: multiply the first, outer, inner, and last pairs.
2y x y = 2y^2
2y x -4 = -8y
3 x y = 3y
3 x -4 = -12
2y^2 + -8y + 3y + -12
combine like terms
2y^2 - 5y - 12

Ok well, this is a binomial so you have to do foil. First. outer. inner. last.
So,
f=2y*y
o=2y*-4
i=3 * y
and
l=3*-4
F= 2y squared
O= -8
I=3y
and L=-12
add -8 and 3 to get -5
so your final answer is 2y squared -5-12
I dont know what everyone else was doing?
