once torre refused the offer, I heard don mattingly, joe giradi, and tony pena were considered, but bowa's name was never mentioned, he had previous experience and seemed to be well liked by the players.

Frankly Larry Bowa has never had the temperament to be an effective major league manager. If you look at his history he has literally become the anti-Christ of each and every franchise he was attached to as a manager. He was extremely impatient with each player and in the case of Scott Rolen, actually caused him to beg to be traded from Philadelphia. The truth be told, Rolen wanted out of Philly anyway but Bowa and Rollin were like oil and vinegar.

Bowa was always a big mouth, do nothing, on the field. Fortunately for him he played with players like Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, and Pete Rose, not to mention one of the most underrated center fielders of his day, Garry Maddox.

The fact is players don't like him. As a third base coach his authority is pretty limited but as a manager he has always had a way of destroying a team from within.

He went with Joe Torre and Don Mattingly. As a Yankee fan I have no problem watching him go back to the National League.

I don't think he would have been able to handle the pressure of the NYC market and George Steinbrenner. I am not a Larry Bowa fan so I am not sorry he wasn't in the top 3 or whatever, for the Yankees job. You really need to be strong to put up with all that goes with managing the Yankees, that is why we were so fortunate to have Joe Torre as long as we did.

Because Larry Bowa was a bad manager in Philadelphia...What makes you think he can do any better in N.Y.?

It didn't work out well for him in San Diego and Philadelphia, and I think that scarred his name for future managing jobs. He's a great coach, not so much a great manager.
