Where I work, I see a fair number of families with mentally handicapped children. These children, because of their condition will never lead a "normal" life or be able to contribute anything to society. They're basically hardships that the families must endure and provide for. I believe that in some Asian cultures, when a mentally handicapped child is born or is detected, the baby will be aborted/killed rather than put the family through the above said problems. Is there something to be said for that? Despite what you think, some of these children will never be able to function as a regular member of society, they just can't. They can't work or provide for themselves. All their lives they must be taken care of. Why not try and have another baby?...One that will be able to grow up and lead a normal life.

The measure of a culture is by how it treats the most vulnerable.

1/150 children are born autistic, but often not diagnosed until age three or more. Do you suggest slaughtering 3 year olds?

Does that mean that when someone is in an accident or fire and becomes paralyzed from the neck down or falls and they become mentally handicapped that we should just destroy them too because they will never lead a normal life again or contribute to society? They will definately be a hardship on their family, not being able to work or provide for themselves.

I think because you see so many families with children who have a handicap you are becoming cold hearted toward the poor kids who are challenged and are feeling sorry for the parents who want their children to live and will try and do everything in their power to take care of them. Try to love them all. Do not think that it is a waste of time and money to
take care of and love these children. Miracles do happen.

Leading a normal life is subjective, as is what one contributes to society. There's a lengthy story a proud father once told about what his mentally challenged child once contributed to a local community, something I won't go into detail about here. Let me just say that it's sad that people in our world think like this, it's really sad.

Actually, seeing as how chances are that only a number of people will contribute more to society than they take from it, shouldn't we only keep the babies that are extremely gifted or competent in certain areas and just do away with the others? Same logic as what you're using.

"The taxpayers pay for all of this."
Yeah, mate, you should be one to talk about how arrogant human beings are.

I too have seen babies no more than a vegetable or a slug.
Being kept on lifesupport for it's entire life. The taxpayers pay for all of this. There are less messed up children and the taxpayers pay for ALL of them. I do not want to pay. I would pay for an abnormal fetus to be aborted.

Parents who want to continue the pregnancy can pay for it themselves AND for all the medical and special education they child will need.

Families suffer needlessly and siblings are often ignored for all the attention on the "special" one.

Nature would NEVER allow this to occur. Only we arrogant humans want to make every thing live - for what purpose, I do not know.

You are about to take a mountain of flack for your ideas. I wish you the best.

Blame the parents and NOT the kids, they're the ones with the damaged genes. So hypocritical how the innocent have to pay for their lousy DNA.
