This is an interesting question because I have been reading that many of the newer younger members of various Christian churches have expressed, to interviewers, pollsters and sociologists, that they are getting rather fed up with hearing the Christian elders ranting about abortion, gay marriage and being pro-war; apparentlly they, being younger and more idealistic, wish the Christian Church to get back into the spirit of walking in Jesus' footsteps, that is, PRACTICING what Jesus taught, rather than flapping their gums, quoting scripture and neglecting the basic tenets of compassion and humanitarianism that supposedly represent the face the Christian Church puts to the world.
it is ALSO interesting that many of the posters here have decided to re-interpret Jesus's teachings to their liking, rather than read what he actually said.
Jesus WAS a socialist, plain and simple, in its pure unadulterated form. One cannot read the scriptures and come to any other conclusion. All share, all help, all give according to their means to the greater good of all, and all forsake the material for the spiritual.
The PROBLEM with the Christian Church is that they have turned their religion into a belief IN Jesus, rather than a belief in what he said.

1. The Republicans don't say that.
2. Jesus never said or intended that the government take your money at the point of a gun and give it to some one else.
3. Early Christians had a problem with socialism.. to many were freeloading at what was the celebration of "communion" meals. It came to: "If any would not work, neither should he eat." 2 Thessalonians iii

He would say they are right. Nowhere will you find it written that he said that the poor were the responsibility of the government or that we should rob the wealthy to pay for the poor. Christ said we would always have the poor with us but that he would be here only a short time when the woman washed his feet with expensive oil and his disciples thought it would be better to sell the oil and feed the poor.
In Genesis you will find that man was cursed to toil in the dust all the days of his life to earn his bread.
So, now that I have told you what the bible says tell us where you get your version of what it says.

So, you think that Jesus would have wanted the poor to be dependent on government? Is that how it reads in your book? My Bible doesn't read that way.
Jesus spent his time among the poor teaching them to NOT be dependent, but to stand up for themselves and to live a life following God, not leaning on others. Yes, it will make them stronger.
Those who cannot take care of themselves will look to their family or to the church for help. Those who can take care of themselves should do so. Any other plan leads to dependency and ennui.

Conservative Christians want to help people, but they want to do it out of charity and Christian love, not because the government puts a gun in our face.
Jesus said to give a person the shirt off your back. He never said to raise taxes, pay a massive bureaucracy, and throw people in jail if they don't pay.

Jesus would be proud that Republicans fight to give the poor every opportunity not to be. Rather then trying to keep them poor and on government sudsidy for their whole lives.

I would think that Jesus would understand the concept of responsibility for oneself, as long as that person is able and trying. For people that are not able, I'm sure Jesus would want us to have mercy.

I don't know about Jesus, but I believe we should take care of the NEEDY. Not, the WANTY, but those who actually could benefit from some help. There is no society on earth where everyone is strong.

I think Jesus would say that all this organized religion is not what he had in mind...... and what he did have .... has been corrupted beyond recognition

People SHOULD take care of themselves.
The only people who think that is a radical idea are socialists who want to redistribute wealth and make everyone poor and dependent on the government.
