Come to my window -- Melissa Ethridge
Sorrowful music makes us ponder and develop creativity, develop poems, write songs, it expands our mind to endless possibilities. We don't grow weary of sad songs. What in the heck, how does a song make us laugh? If we was laughing we wouldn't be able to sing the song. "I've got the power"

It is not so much a song itself but what a person associates with it that will bring out the laughter or the tears.
Because of You, The Arms of the Angel and More Than Words will get me every time. When I am with a bunch of Baby Boomers, they all seem to give secret smiles when listening to Nights in White Satin or Stairway to Heaven.
My parents are especially moved by Frank Sinatra.
What's in a song? The times and emotions surrounding it make the song unique for each person.

people say
he's happy, he's depressing, he's greedy, he's dumb
characteristics are either relative terms applied by the perceptions of others or they are just emotions
so, is the personality based on the one you reflect the most but since you may at some point cross into another emotion or characteristic then more or less you are in constant transitions
music seems to appeal to hearing
sometimes the same words have different meanings to each person
obviously the music itself is a personal attraction but sometimes it's all enjoyed because it usually finds a way to represent an entire group
i don't prefer to listen that makes me cry but if i did it's because the sound and/or the words created some life affirming awareness in me
if something can actually create tears, it may just be beautiful but either way it must have really effected me
and anything that can have that deep of an impact on you is probably worth encountering again
music is an amazing thing like that
sound can transform you
and lyrics can influence you but it's always better to make your own decisions
you can't blame music. it just appeals to what part of you you enjoy being in the first place
it's like a catalyst for self
or an inhibitor for lack of

I am drawn to any music, but especially to mellow with potentially sorrowful songs. It reminds me how fragile the integrity of a person could be and I feel sad for some people. For example, I read that Britney Spears requested for Coldplay to attend her wedding. I read that her favorite is "Yellow". I personally like the song and I feel having an image of a "downtrodden" person is sad. The juxtaposition of her once greatness in popularity and fame versus being the troubled person she is today, is shocking and it compells me to sadness. It's not thoughts of Britney that is sad...she symbolizes ANY downtrodden, downfallen star. The mental and psychological downfall is the greatest besides the fall from fame and glory.
While many people think of Britney Spears as a joke, I see her as a once intact person who is now broken mentally and psychologically. I see her as a person to sympathize with. So what if she is a celebrity and the intelligent people do not engage in celebrity gossip? I feel sorry for her nevertheless, despite her celebrity or infamous status and the recklessness that caused the mishaps. Linking "Yellow" to Britney, symbol of downfall, leaves me to sympathize, not judge.
There is a growing trend of celebrities who are disillusioned and fallen from glory. There is a growing trend of gen-Y and gen-Z youths who think achieving beauty, fame, and wealth are most prized goals. There is an overcommercialization of the concept of "beauty" and the cost of beauty is simply money. These desires are nothing short of timeless; however, we've never been bombarded by the media as we are now. This means more specific parameters of beauty, success, etc. It's leads to quicker and harsher judgments about what qualifies and what doesn't.
There's a desensitization to the horrific lengths people will go to achieve beauty, fame, or success. That's the sad part.
When James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" hiked up the charts, it was because people (women) want to feel beautiful and be told that we are beautiful. In the aftermath, people ended up sick of the song, which I still enjoy, because it was ultimately empty. Just because the song tells you, doesn't in reality, mean you are beautiful. The hidden meaning in that song is ultimately sad...
When a song remind me of the reality of the losses of love or any other pursuits--fame, success, fortune, etc, and I specifically can recall personal tales, that's when it's sad. That's why I also like Coldplay's "Fix You".

I have a play list that is full of sad songs, some are even in different languages. I use this as a way to purge tension and basically force myself to cry at an appropriate time, there's nothing like getting caught when you're in a foul mood. I avoid these songs at all other times, I don't like to have my mind wander to mad memories, I like to keep upbeat and happy, it makes people wonder what I'm up to, and it's a great way to keep from getting a furrow in the brow.

I personally do not like to listen to sad music, I have enough to bring me down in real life and do not need anything adding to it. I mostly enjoy instrumentals. I am extremely introverted, so this might have something to do with that.

There is one profoundly sad song that I listen to. It is a song that I use to remind myself that no matter how bad I may think things are for me, it could always be worse.
