Demo means demonstration. Its a smaller version of the game which is meant to show you what the game is like so you can figure out if you like it.

A demo is free. Its a tiny game which is like an advertisement for the big game. The full game you have to buy. But at least it saves you from paying money for a game and then finding out that you dont like it.
