Does the playstation2 slimline play ps1 games?

Mine doesn't, it comes up with the memory card screen. I've tried putting in a ps1 memory card but it shows the same thing. I don't know what to do. I really wanna play my ps1 final fantasy games on it.

My slimline PS2 plays PS1 games perfectly. Do you have a warranty for your PS2? If so, you should return it, all the slimline PS2's should play PS1 games.
