Usually the odor-causing components in hydrocarbon products are unsaturated hydrocarbons (hydrocarbons with 1 or more double bonds); these unsaturated hydrocarbons are soluble in sulfuric acid but the saturated ones are not, so on a commercial scale, sufuric acid is used for the deodorization.
