before you jump all over me, read this. Scott Brosis was not given a chance to come back, the yanks forced him to retire, tino martinez was not brought back as the yankees wanted giambi so bad, david cone was cut loose for having a injury during his last year of his contract, bernie williams was told to come and try out for the team after 13 years as a starter, joe torre was told win or get fired and he was only given a token offer after 12 years, jope girardi was told to train posada for his job as starting catcher and then he was given the boot, all of these people were key, repeat key members of the team and all got the yankee shaft, i love the yanks, but hate the way they treat people sometimes, i really dont know why anyone would want to be on the team.

You bring up some pretty good points. However, it does seem that the players are treated very well while on the team. Sadly, these days, players are only kept around while they are the best option, numbers wise, for a team. This is not limited to the Yankess. "What have you done for me lately, and what are you likely to do in the near future?"

Although it is tough seeing the players you love on the team you love get tossed aside (which is why I think the question was asked), baseball is a BUSINESS. If they kept all of those players you refer to (Brosius, Tino, Cone, Girardi) the Yanks would have been killed in the media for keeping players beyond their prime much like in the late 80's early 90's when they kept and signed players that had no business getting the contracts they did. Brosius was clearly on the decline and nobody forced him to retire; he didn't want to play for another organization. Tino was a great defensive first baseman but let's face it: in 2001 his production dropped off and was clearly not the same offensive player while Giambi was coming off another .300/35/120 (being conservative here) and an MVP; nobody could have predicted at the time that Giambi would have a drain on the team offensively /defensively that he has been. Coney was CLEARLY well past his prime and Posada was a much better ofensive catcher than Girardi could have ever hoped to be and YOUNGER. As far as Torre: it was really tough to see him go, but at the end of the day the Yanks spend $200,000,000/year on their players and they certainly do not spend it to get ousted in the first round three years in a row. Torre was saved in 2004 when he really mismanaged the ALCS against the Red Sox, and has been unable to get them into the ALCS again against two teams they easily should have beaten with their talent level. Remember, everybody wanted him gone after 2006, and the Yanks brought him back again, so they were loyal to him, probably to a fault.
As far as why anyone would ever want to play for them is really easy...
1) Every year is a realistic chance to go to the World Series and win because the Steinbrenners spend money;
2) They play in the biggest sports market in the country;
3) They are the most storied franchise in the history of sports.
Keep rooting for the Yanks; 2008 World Series Champs!

How did the Yankees force Scott Brosius to retire? He could have played for a different team if he wanted to play another season. The Yankees thought it would be an upgrade from Tino Martinez to Jason Giambi and who could blame them. Both were probably on steroids anyway. Lots of pitchers, especially old pitchers, get released after suffering an injury. Williams was clearly not as good as he used to be and was no longer capable of playing 150 games a year. I'll give you Joe Torre, he got a bad deal from the Yankees and got a job almost immediately after he was let go. Jorge Posada is still on the team and Joe Girardi is still manager so I don't know what you meant by that. EDIT: I see, you mean when Joe Girardi was a player on the Yankees. You said he was supposed to train Posada, implying that Girardi would be gone soon anyway. Besides, Girardi went on to play several more seasons and is now back as manager so I doubt he can complain.
Why would anyone want to play for the Yankees? They have deep pockets and would you rather play in Toronto or Tampa Bay or Baltimore or Kansas City or a number of other places not as prestigious or rich as New York.

Your majesty -- I agree. The treatment of Bernie Williams was an atrocity. Business or not, baseball is entertainment, too. The fans wanted Bernie and the Steinbrenners treated him awfully. That had to be bad for business. Then the way that they dealt with Joe Torre was dreadful. They didn't want to fire him and incur any wrath, so they treated him like dog. I used to be a Yankee fan, but until Saddam and sons give them up, I'll be a man without a team. Glad I have a queen, m'lady.
Your servant,

Every player in the game today knows these kinds of things can happen to any player, it is the nature of the game. Management must do everything they can to field a winning team and the Yankees are no different than any other team. Players come and players go and we can all thank "free agency" for this player movement. Player salaries have escalated because of Free Agency and this is the downside that the players have to accept.

Baseball is a business.
Brosius could've gone and played with another team after his years with the Yankees - they can't force anyone to retire, there are 29 other MLB teams.
Giambi was better than Tino at the time - that was a baseball decision.
Cone was at the end of his career, along with Bernie - again, baseball decisions.
Torre was offered an extremely fair contract, which he turned down.

Because they pay well, you can become more exposed to the national media in effect helping people see you who normally wouldn't and the tradition. I agree with you but some people would step on their own mother to get what they want. It sucks that we've come down to this.
