I have a knife that was given as a gift to my grandfather in WWII when he served in the US Army in Europe as a medic. It's a German Red Cross knife carried by the officers of that service. I tried donating it to the Holocaust Museum in DC, but they didn't want it. Who else could I give this to? I want it to stay out of the hands of any neo-Nazis or something like that. Who else would accept this sort of thing? I'd be fine with selling it and donating the proceeds as well, but again, I wouldn't want it to be purchased by someone associated with the Nazis and their heinous ideology. I don't think my grandfather would care what I do with it, as long as it goes to help people somehow.

There is the D-Day museum in New Orleans built especially for the World War II veterans. You can donate here if you desire.

Think about donating it to your closest historical museum, such as a town or county museum. They will be more likely to take it than a national museum. You might also want to save it for your children or a deserving nephew. I'm saving my Dad's WWII knife for my great-nephews.

If all else fails you could contact West Point or Fort Sam Houston which is where medics train for the US Army.
