Is that your photo on your avatar, thats a nice shirt you have on.. how much did it cost?
did you wash your feet, how much was the soap. what if you couldnt afford these things?
I dont mean to be rude, but your question seems asked by a 5year old, are you truley unaware of the answer to it.
my brief answer would be that it is the system of the world 'you' live in and it gives power to do and obtain things.
do you pay bills? what would happen if you dont?why do you even bother paying them? anyhow
about the system; philosophers might say there are many alternatives, but as of now the current state IS how the world functions.
animals arent crazy over money, primitive peoples in their far off jungle (for example) aren't crazy over money.
"people" with no need of money arent crazy over money.
and in essence I dont belive there is a single human who does not view money as only a tool to get what they want.

It's an anthropology thing I believe. Humans are conditioned psychologically to collect things. We're preprogrammed this way. Ever observe a culture on TV, or through old photos, that has no monetary system? They are isolated from the world and other people. There's no money, and maybe only a small amount of trading with in the group. Still, their tents, huts, caves, what ever, are adorned with items they have collected such as shiny rocks, bones, teeth, and things they have made. I think that's where it starts for more modern people. We want things too. And money is a lucrative system that everyone can use to obtain things. And the money comes from providing the goods, services, and labors that others need, want and desire. And yes, giving does feel good. In fact, Americans give more than any other country. People have to work for what they want, but they often give to help others too.

The university where I worked had a program where they allowed donors to have a bench with a small brass marker and a person's name put on that marker for only $1000, they had dozens if not hundreds of people to donate a $1000 just for the honor of having their name or a loved ones or someone who retired that they respected on the bench, cost about $300 for the bench, concrete base and labor, the other money paid for landscaping in nearby areas. They also have donors who paid many thousands of dollars $25,000 or much more, to get something named after them, a lounge in a dorm, a new building, etc. at the university. They may want to donate something anyway and what they get in return is the "honor" of having their name on a small plaque for 30 years or longer. Appealing to people's egos helps to increase the donations. I remember when a lounge was just a lounge or a building was named after the department that was housed for, now the entire university has someone's name on it, and if the employees slip up and call it by the old name they are corrected by their managers. After all, it might get back to the person who donated the money that their name wasn't really being used for the building. I have also heard of people who offer their bodies for corporate logo tattoos in exchange for a great deal of money. I wonder if it were legal if they would let their babies or children be tattooed for a $ too.

Great we are in a state of desire which will never end and we can never go away from this even at the time of death. So the item which fulfills all our desires(as we think) is MONEY.
As most of our desires are either physical or emotional so we need money to accomplish our needs. Either they may be basic or luxury, anyone you can't deny them.
So I think it is not bad to run crazy for money but in the bottom line what I would like to say is yes atleast use 5-10% of your money for good deeds, which may give you a peace of mind.

because money is the backbone of society
without money, there is no poverty since it's relative to those with a lot of money
now, you can't effectively educate yourself without it
you need to eat but even if you wanted to grow your own food you would need to buy the land for it
but if you work all day, you lose time and you may be too exhausted physically to use the time you have after
i don't want to be extremely wealthy
i want enough to have my basic needs filled
and acquire a comfortable setting to exist in
so i can use all my time effectively
people then are crazy for money maybe because in reality they are crazy for time
but the reality they exist in is society
and in society, money can buy you more free time
i'd like to find a solution to a general problem that helps everyone but remain completely anonymous
though just saying this is not the best way to start, haha
i don't know if there's anything i can do
but if i can, i'll do it

For your age you can talk like this. Everybody who is earning money by their own efforts till they are happy and self sufficient, will tell that the money what they have acquired is not enough. A stage will come after some years the person will think the money is not everything.
So wait for time to give others a chance to get the money and then let them say what you say now. Yours,

i think lot of people have answered your question, so no point in repeating what they have said. I would only like to request to be PRACTICAL and dont talk like Osho or Mahrishi Mahesh. Money is a neccessity in life, without money u cant even die. U say u cant take money with u after your death. But money is required even for the last rites and then year after year for sharadh, brahmin bojhan etc.
No money , no Life.+

True Sir,but the thing is you came to realise this after attaining certain age,but people tend to realise this later in life like you.Money is the solution and the problem as well.I mean it is a necessary evil. But,i agree with you and adore people like Warren Buffet who have thrown off all their money for the people. So you might be a philanthropist but you see Humans are made like this ,can't help it!

As long as we are stuck within us, and see everyone around as as "others", giving cannot easily happen. "Having" would seem to be the priority, with that basic survival instincts. Nothing wrong with those basic instincts. But, over a period of time, when a human being sees the futility of senseless running after acquiring, far beyond the basic needs, then perhaps the need to explore further into this incessant restrictive activity arises. The self-awareness (unique to humans) would assist in also experiencing that others are also part of ourselves in one way or other (scientific mind would substanciate with the logic of physical "inter-dependence") and then the giving would start making some sense. It would be the response-ability (not that 'accountability oriented responsibility) of evolved persons to persuade the stuck persons!

Man no longer survives in a nature wherein he lives upon the fruits of nature but has recreated nature such that he only survives under his own kind and that money is the only means for survival.
'Private property has made us so stupid and one-sided that an object is only ours when we have it – when it exists for us as capital, or when it is directly possessed, eaten, drunk, worn, inhabited, etc., – in short, when it is used by us. Although private property itself again conceives all these direct realisations of possession only as means of life, and the life which they serve as means is the life of private property – labour and conversion into capital. We should no longer give on shame nor guilt but wisdom. If we may agree in freely giving to each other we may then freely receive from one an other, then we know wisdom.
