math problemo!!?

Question

11x^2 = 49

I'm not sure the answer. I know it's something like 7/sqrt11 over 11 or something but I need help !! pls help!!

1. divide both sides by 11 to get: x^2 = 49/11

2. Take sqrt of both sides to get : x = sqrt of 49/ sqrt of 11

3. Simplify: x = 7/sqrt of 11

4. rationalize ( to remove sqrt from the denominator) to get
x = 7(sqrt 11)/((sqrt 11) * (sqrt 11))

5. Simplify to get x = 7(sqrt 11)/11

with any equation you just need to remember one rule; whatever you do to one side do the other and the equation will continue to hold. So with your formula we have:

11*x^2 = 49

square root both sides we get
sqrt(11) * x = 7

divide both sides with sqrt(11) we get
x = 7/sqrt(11)

Put "7/sqrt(11)" into a calculator or type it into google search box and we get

x = 2.11057941

Its always best to check your answer. So plug x back in the original formula and we get:

11 * 2.11057941^2 which produces 48.999999

good enough for jazz!

One word of caution: when you take a square root of something the answer can be either positive or negative. So in the first step above we really should have written

sqrt(11) * x = +/- 7

which means x = +/- 2.11057941

All of the above ans made a cruicial mistake and forget about the negative root. This is very common among those who know very very little about the subject. Now since you have X^2 then you have 2 roots and thus the correct ans is
take sqrt of both sides you get

X = 7/sqrt(11) or X = -7/sqrt(11)
