Check out this website for tracking satellites and other objects. http://science.nasa.gov/Realtime/JTrack/
The amount of objects we will never know. Also look at the layers of orbits. This software is really nice.

However this does not include space "junk" in orbit--- like a dropped tool or a bolt that came off of a rocket booster sometime in the past............. or the golf ball one of the astronauts hit while doing a spacewalk.
