I did a lab on science class and the teachers gave us some questions to add to our lab report.
It says, write the chemical equation for soap production. (it may be unbalanced)

I reall have no idea what to do..

What we used was
*Castor oil
*Sodium Hydroxide (20%) - NaOH
*Sodium Chloride (salt) - NaCl

and we ended up with soap.

Please help i would gladly appreciate it.

Castor oil is mostly a triglyceride of ricinolinic acid (12-hydroxy-cis-9-octadecanoic acid. When you react it with sodium hydroxide you spit the 3 organic acid units off the glycerin (as the sodium salt) which is soap. The sodium chloride is added to help drive the soap out of solution.

Since the structure for the organic acid is sort of complicated I will use the letter "R" to designate the long hydrocarbon groups which are attached to the glycerin.

RCOOCH2CH(OOCR)CH2OOCR + 3 NaOH

---> 3 RCOONa + HOCH2CH(OH)CH2OH
