cafe claude!!! this place is wonderful! Everything is imported straight from paris, but the prices are very reasonable!! Its hidden in an alleyway called claude lane....Cozy, private, and excellent dishes. Perfect for a night out with friends or a romantic evening. Amazing service as well....even the waiters are french and adorable! I highly recommend the dessert...they have this warm flourless chocolate cake that is definately a must!! I loved the outdoor seating and heaters as well!! I enjoy everything about this restaurant!

Don't worry about it. Walk. The Tenderloin is seedy, but not dangerous as long you don't get involved in others' dealings. Keep your head about you and just walk like it's no big deal... and it won't be a big deal. I've walked through the Tenderloin at night countless times, as I know people who live there. And I'm really small and non-threatening, and I've never had a problem there. If anything many of the people there are very nice and just want to talk... as long as you don't agree to go anywhere or buy anything, you're perfectly fine. I mean, the neighborhood's seedy and has that kind of crime, but there aren't really any gangs there like in the Outer Mission or Bayview, so random crime/random targets of crime is VERY rare (as most of the "unsavory" people there are too screwed up to even be aware of your existence). And some parts, particularly Polk, are actually pretty booming restaurant and bar scenes (so have lots of people around). The neighborhood has a very unfair reputation, mostly from people who moved to the city from elsewhere and haven't really grown up around it/realised it's not a big deal. They see a guy passed out in his own urine with a needle in his arm and panic (nevermind that said guy is in no position to harm anyone at that moment). But everyone who trashes the Tenderloin tends to leave out that it's also where many families, college students (especially art students), artists, etc... live - most of whom (especially the latter 2 categories) also walk around late at night, and are also generally non-threatening (unless you consider art-student angled bang hairdos "threatening"). Is it the cleanest, coziest neighborhood? No. But it has it's own charm. And as long as you don't get involved in the seedy things that happen there (and thus people have no reason to bother you) then it's highly unlikely that anyone will even talk to you. And if they do, it's likely just coz they want someone to talk to. And that applies to the Tenderloin itself. "Near" the Tenderloin is a moot issue. I mean, Union Square and Nob Hill (and just a bit further, Russian Hill) are "near" the Tenderloin, and they're some of the fluffiest parts of the city.
