*Ahem*

Female virginity was referred to, in the old days, as Feminia Intacta... she still has her hymen.

This is from the same Catholic folks who brought us witnessing the marriage bed.

The idea being that the existence of the hymen was the end-all proof of female virginity (even though we now know that ain't so true).

In the case of the man, without witnessing the act, his virginity or lack of is hearsay. So, those folks a few thousand years ago probably figured that you couldn't prove it.

Oh yea, and that whole virility to produce the most and strongest young through the widest gene pool thing was, until recently, very important to the survival of an ethnic group.

We don't think of it that way, but things like Darfur and pretty much any war where one side hates the other because they are different cultures (like... most of them?), if one side's birth rate falls off, while a pogram is on the people, those people will forever cease to exist, and the victors will ensure that history forgets their names.

These days, that's not an issue, so we pull out the purity card, and see how weird people thought when they were all in the dark ages and whatnot.

Is virginity prized, at all, these days, except by the virgin's dad? Seriously, I hear many of these ladies go on and on about how badly men want virgins... what adult male can even say he KNOWS a virgin, much less will have the opportunity to marry one? Aren't people these days getting married in their 30's? Who's a virgin at 30? That 40 year old from the movie? Guess what? It's a movie!

Outside this forum (probably the only place I interact with teenagers) I haven't heard the word virgin (accept when to signify a certain divine Mary) in conversation in like ten years.

probably because of the peer pressure atttached with men and sex. If you have seen the movies American Pie, it's pretty much about how our culture or guys are obsessed with losing virginity, partly because they are horny and partly becaus of a self esteem thing or fitting in with the guys or competition thing. Like being a man or the top dog by scoring with girls, it's unfortunately a thing that somes guys feel they have to lose to have some worth, because if they are virgins they must not be desirable or sexually appealing or bums. So a man wants to be "the man" and virile and feel that way so he tries to have sex and lose it. I think peer pressure and culture defintiely has a lot to do with such emphasis on a man not prizing his virginity but instead maybe feeling bad that he is still a virgin if he is older than other guys who have lost theirs, like the lack of sexually appealing thing I said again.

I don't virginity is prized with girls either nowadays as most have had sex in highschool. And sex is not dirty or bad, it's uptight people who made it seem that way. It's just being smart about sex that is the thing regarding protection and not sleeping with the whole city or the dirtiest person or else one will probably get an STD.

I wish I never had sex till I got married but most guys have sex bc it is an addiction. The male anatomy is pretty crazy but our society has dropped standards for so much. Purity is a two way street but if your kids aren't taught that at home and in school the view becomes blurred and they choose what feels good not what feels right. The morals of this society are screwing up minds.

This has always been a double standard issue. Males believe they become men when they lose theirs (far from it) and I really think it is a maucho thing. It gives them kind of a bragging right. Which most do anyways whether they lose it or not. All the guys want to have a virgin because then they can brag . They see it as having gotten something that no-one else will ever get as once it is gone it is gone

I can't speak for other men but I tell you the truth. I have waited for the right woman. I wish I could say the same for the women my age. From the time I was a teen even now I wish I could find a woman that did prise her virginity.

Women and girls cannot be expected to remain virgins when there are men out there who have been taught since boyhood to "sow their wild oats" with as many females possible. Male virginity is equally important as female virginity. No double standard allowed!

Men are considered conquerors, and its not so much that its not prized, as we just assume they're going to sew their wild oats.

Theres something slightly appealing about a man who's gone out and had his time of personal conquest, but not so much the same is considered for women.

I think its just part of the mentality of society.

In a society where men are expected to take the lead, that also means sexually. Therefore, in our twisted world, we desire to train our sons while keeping our daughters pure...go figure. Mind you, don't allow any of your sons to form an attachment with a female that would allow herself to be the training instrument of young boys.

Not having a hymen is not necessarily proof that a woman is not a virgin. It can be broken from using tampons or any other object a woman may put in there.

Cuz men cant get pregnant. It stems from the times before contraceptives. ANd if you payed any attention, I do not really see how what used to be called a slut differs from what men are willing to marry thesedays.
