US Dimes, Quarters, and Half Dollars dated 1964 and before are 90% silver. A ton of US silver coins has a face value of $36,364 and with the current spot price of silver their value is just under $400,000 per ton. Every 2 and 1/2 tons that he has is worth about $1,000,000.

Well the 1964 dimes and quarters are .900 silver so they are worth 8 times face or so. I don't know why the nickels for they have no silver in them. Over the years I have seen a lot of strange looking 1964 nickel. The mint is quite about it by I think they had problems with the making of the planchets or experimented with different medal combo's. There are a lot that have strange colors to them. Your grandfather may have also noticed this and saved them.

Yes, 1964 was the last year the coins were made with silver. After that the coins were copper with silver and alloy plate, somewhat of a sandwich coin. The halfs, quarters, and dimes were the ones that this appies to, the nickles were uneffected.

Yes - the '64 and before coins have more silver in them than the '65 and later coins - and thus far more valuable.
