I saw this phone number to sign up as an extra for a movie. It's in California, and I'm like all the way across the country, so I was wondering if auditions are required for roles as extras.

Different production companies have different processes. Some require auditions and some do not. I would contact the company to find out.

And I would also like to say that it is a bit insulting to say that extras are not important. They help to set the mood by helping create a realistic world for the action of the story. Sometimes they audition for extras because they are looking for a very specific type of person.

It depends. Sometimes an auditionis required if they are looking for certain types or looks for the extras. Extras usually mean no pay or very little pay - probably not worth a plane ticket unless you are super serious as acting for a career and can afford the $$$. It would look nice on your resume if you are just starting out. I was an extra in a few movies when I lived in NY but I wound up on the cutting room floor in all of them. For one I got paid a Kentucky Fried Chicken box lunch for sitting around and cheering for 8 hours as a sportsfan, in another I was paid $50 for crossing a street for 8 hrs but missed 3 of my classes. The other 3 I got got no $$$. Don't miss important stuff or goe through a big expense. Write a list of pros and cons to make a good desision for yourself.

Usually not, but why would you want to contact them if you are so far away? Even if they call you, you might get called in for a job, they will probably call you to be there the very next day. They might not even call you until late in the day and give you an early morning call time.
If you are really all the way across the country, try these websites where you can get some extra work for both film and television: http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/extra_casting.html

you cant get a job as an extra if you live in a different state, how the heck do you think you would get there to do the work? Stop looking for auditions and if you want to be an actor get your parents to support your idea and help you , otherwise, forget it.
