Kirribili House is John Howard's current residence.

And yes, I am serious about this question... I would like to know whether or not John Howard will be forced to move out!

Kirriibilli House is NOT the official PM residence.

The official PM residence is The Lodge in Canberra. Kirribilli house is a secondary house that was only meant to be used for short term stays or extending hospitality while the PM happens to be in Sydney.

John Howard decided that he would use Kirribilli House as his primary residence, but that is not standard practice for Australian Prime Ministers and is pretty lame in my opinion, Canberra is the capital, so that is where the PM should be.

Generally the PM should be living in The Lodge, which was intended to be the primary residence of the PM, because it is in Canberra and close to Parliament House.

As to the second question: Kevin Rudd has said that John Howard can take his time moving out (and he does appear to be taking his time, he just threw a dinner party there if I heard the news report correctly) but certainly he won't be able to stay there forever. It's not his property anymore. Apart from the massive amount of shame that will be dumped on him if he tries to spin out his stay there, I'm sure Kevin won't allow him to stay there longer than a month (or at least will put the pressure on him to move), despite what he has said previously. In fact, I think it's actually law that the previous Prime Minister has to be gone from all Prime Ministerial residences and offices six weeks after the Prime Minister-elect is sworn in as Prime Minister, but don't quote me on that one.

He must vacate within 6 weeks.

I dont know if this is correct but i heard Kirribilli House was actually meant for housing visiting diplomats and the Prime Ministers primary residence is supposed to be in Canberra, but Johnny Howard decided he wanted to live there because he was a Sydney resident and wanted to live somewhere posh near the harbour.

Either way, yes John Howard will definately have to move out.

Kevin Rudd stated during the election he will be living at the Lodge. Kirribilli house will be used for official functions in Sydney. He has also stated he informed John Howard he can take his time moving out of Kirribilli and the lodge. The handover of government this election seems to be one of respect and courtesy from both sides of politics. I think this shows the world how great our country is.

I believe that now Mr Rudd is the Prim Minister of Australia that he will move into Kirribilli House the only question is WHEN ?As i understand it at the moment that Prim Minister Rudd has said that he will give Mr Howard and his family as much time as they need / want to vacate the House of the Australian Prime Minister. And then and only then will The New Prim Minester and his Family will take up residents of Kirribilli House.

The Aust PM residence is the Lodge here in Canberra, it is paid for by tax payers, is provided for the PM to be close to all the Governement Departments and Parliament House itself. Any PM that doesn't live there should be immediately sacked from ofice.... if you too a job in Sydney, would you travel there and back every day....... NO you would not and neither should the PM elect and no should John Howard ever have not lived there, he should not have been allowed to get away with this at all! His contempt stunk and should not have been tolerated by the peopleof this country, typical Liberal thinking.
If Rudd cannot be bothered to live there fir 3 + years the he too should be kicked out of the office!

He'll be moving out within days, he has to. Anyway, The Lodge in Canberra is the traditional and official residence of our PM's. Howard just preferred squatting in Kirribilli, instead of living in Canberra, and racking up huge travel expenses. Rudd is expected to live in Canberra at the Lodge, which is appropriate.

I doubt anyone would care if Mr Howard stayed there 6 months or longer. For god sakes, he's devoted his whole life to politics, as a servant to the people. As a sign of respect he should stay as long as it takes him to move. The fact remains, both sides of politics have praised the man for his service.

I being a labour voter have no issue in him staying as long as he likes. Not one person has stated he has done bad for our country, just that his time was up.

He ( John Howard) could have made 20 times the wages out side of politics, we really do under value some, but not all, Paul Keating is an exception.

As I understand it Kirribili House is the official residence of the Australian Prime Minister. So, it's in the same category as the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC in the USA, 24 Sussex Drive in Ottawa Canada and 10 Downing Street in London. That tells me Mister Howard must vacate the residence to the incoming Prime Minister.

When in Canberra he will live at "The Lodge" which is the official residence of the PM.
When in Sydney, he will stay at "Kirribilli House" which is the PM's residence in Sydney.
When he is back in his own electorate in Brisbane, he will live in his own personal home.
Anywhere else in Australia he will stay in hotels.
