1st: Hamlet asks the visiting troup of actors to put on a play called, "The Murder of Gonzago," together with such lines as Hamlet will write for them. In fact, Hamlet has the players re-enact the murder of Hamlet's own father, also called Hamlet, by the means that was communicated to Hamlet by his father when the ghost first appeared.

2nd: As to symbols, I am innocent of them.

There are hundreds of symbols in Hamlet. One very interesting scene where symbols are used in in Ophelia's mad scene just before her death. She is carrying wildflowers and mentions several by name. If you go to a list of the meanings of flowers, you will find that each of the flowers she mentions has a very specific meaning to the characters in the play. Shakespeare was very crafty at doing things like that.

In the play performed by the travellig players - which he refers to as "The Mousetrap" (another symbol and also the name of a play by Agatha Christie) Hamlet is not only trying to trap his Uncle into a confession of guilt, he is also trying to see what the loyalty of his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern is. You will not that when Claudius walks out in a huff, R and G (idiots they are) follow him - telling Hamlet they are on his side. His only friend Horatio stays. If R and G stayed, they would have been able to continue as Claudius's spies. PS - If you want to watch a Hamlet movie - make it the Kenneth Branaugh one. It follows the script exactly and is magnificent.

there are so many symbols in hamlet...just pick a scene and you are bound to have at least ten. he tests his uncle's guilt by asking some players to put on a performance basically mirroring what the uncle did to hamlet's father.
