I'm pretty sure, based on the time period the clip is from, that the book was his own first published one, 'In His Own Write'. It was a collection of poems and short stories, many seemingly nonsensical, but they give tremendous insight into Lennon's creative process as a songwriter. Puns and other wordplay, word associations, purposeful misspellings and outright 'stream of consciousness' provided a hint of things to come in later Beatles songs. His second book, 'A Spaniard in the Works' I found even more bizarre.

It may not come across as the best stuff as read on the printed page, but it sure worked in classics like 'I Am the Walrus".

I don't know what he was reading out of in this clip, but I know a pretty good book of poems and short stories John wrote called:In His Own Write.
