i mean those cheap laces kind not the strap kind

The best way is to start by tightening the laces at the bottom of the boot up to the bend point (where the laces start up the leg). You can get this part of the laces tighter and then put a knot when you cross the laces. This will keep the lower part of the boot tighter.

Then lace the top of the boot up to the top - this part cannot be as tight or your leg will loose circulation. Most boots have a "power strap" at the top, but if yours don't, you can get aftermarket ones that go around the top of your boot. This will give you more power on your toe edge without having your boots too tight.
