I know what you are going through! I once had an apartment similar to yours. Do you live in a multi-dwelling complex? I swept and mopped my floors daily. I cleaned my cabinets, and put things like flour, sugar, cereal and pasta in air tight containers. My apartment was spotless and I still had roaches. Honostly, it does not matter how clean your apartment is if your building is infested with them. You don't know how clean your neighbors are. So please do not believe that the roaches are all your fault. At least where I lived the landlord did not accuse me. He told me everything I just stated above. But, if you have not deep cleaned you kitchen-get to it asap! Line your floor corners with boric acid and get roach hotels. It will keep the roaches down some.

Everytime you make a request for your landlord to do things, put it in writing. Make a copy for yourself and send it certified mail. Keep records of these. Give the landlord reasonable time to come and fix the problem. Say 2 weeks. If she still refuses to rectify the problem, then you start deducting rent. Take a portion of the rent away to have your apartment fumigated. Get a reciept from the exterminator and supply a copy of it to your landlord. Get you AC fixed and do the same. Mind you-If you live with other people, this means nothing because the whole building should be exterminated at the same time for effective results. Call the department of health, I know you are not the only tenant with roaches. They live in the walls and go apartment to apartment. Call legal aid in your area, to see what you rights are. Do not allow your landlord to accuse you for everything because she is too cheap to take care of it.

Good Luck!

Actually, your landlord is correct. Roaches (not croaches) don't infest buildings in which they cannot find food. If you call the health department, you will discover that you will be told the same thing your landlady is telling you.

Fumigation is but a temporary fix. It will kill the roaches which are exposed to the fumes. Those in hiding will survive and be right back there within a short week. The kitchen is the place to start. Do a thorough cleaning of the cabinets, inside and out, as well as the areas where the wall meets the floor. Dirt tends to collect in these areas, and roaches find it a veritable feast.

You can also attempt inexpensive roach controls on your own. Hardware stores have assorted roach traps and killers, and plain borax works as well.

You can start with the health department and when call Fair Housing. You can also send her a certified letter stating that the problem has been on going, and if she does not have a professional person to come and spray withing thirty days you will deduct the charges from your next rent.

Her nickname is SLUM LORD.
