You can get free lessons online, you have to practice and thats it. I have played for 40 years, the first 8 I practiced ten hours a day and had nothing to learn from, now I have unlimited resources and I practice 20 minutes a day.
I learn one riff a day. Learn your chords, learn how to play blues, then learn rock, then learn theory. Always search out better players to learn from when you get to that point. Being versatile is Key, I know a thousand metal heads that only play thier originals and cannot jam with any one else because they have limited themselves to one style of music. I did that for a long time and then opened up my mind to learning as many styles as I could learn. Learning the blues and how to play with feeling first is important, because theory will make your playing sterile and without feeling.

For $150-$200 you can get a Squier package deal that includes a Squier Stratocaster (cheaper immitation of the excellent Fender Stratocaster), a small amp, and a not-bad DVD from Fender on how to play. Sooner or later you'll want to trade up to a nicer guitar, but the Squier will get you by for a year or two, then you can always sell it to offset the cost of a nicer axe. Costco has a similar deal on the Fender Starcaster, which is Fender's other knock-off of their Stratocaster. I've got a Starcaster and I'm actually very happy with it.

Want to get started even more cheaply? Pick up a year-old Squier Strat or Starcaster from someone who's trading up to a better qualify guitar.

As for learning: it ain't easy, period. Be prepared to practice A LOT. I strongly recommend getting just a few lessons to get started - there are usually very inexpensive group lessons you can find through your local school or YMCA.

Avoid the "First Act" guitars - they're poorly made and difficult to play.

It's always best to start with acoustic first, that way it would be easier when you play electric because you already know the strings. As a start, look around for vids about guitar basics, and then maybe get an online tutorial on guitar tabs to play simple little things.

What IS IT with you people? You supposedly want to learn to play the electric guitar but you don't want to practice you don't want to spend any money and you don't want to make any effort at all.

I don't understand this attitude... WHAT IS IT with you people that you think you have a RIGHT to everything for FREE?

Anything worth doing is something you will have to make an EFFORT to do and something you will have to PAY MONEY FOR.

At least you want to learn to play a REAL guitar and not that childish guitar Hero that is nothing you can use later in life to actually PLAY a guitar.

Try Youtube instructional videos. There are lots online.

Screw Guitar Hero, it's a stupid video game that makes you think you're actually playing guitar.
