I have a rather small russian tort. Approx. 4-5" long. He lives in a beautifully decorated 55 gal. tank. My daughter purchased some hermit crabs and wants to put them in the same tank as the tortoise. Is that safe for both of them? Will they be able to co-exsist? My Tortoise is such a sweet little guy and I don't want to do anything to upset or hurt him. Thanks for the help.

Nooo you cant! Even if your tortoiuse is sweet, it could kill the hermit crabs. Also, those are two totally different creatures from different areas. That means different habitats, climate, food, etc. Heres some things about hermit crabs.
You need to have atleast 5+ inches high of sand in their tank so they can dig underground. You HAVE to keep their tanks moist. They are tropical so they need sun and moist sand. Also you need to bathe them to keep sand outof their shells. One way to bathe them is to get a small container with water. Then you pick up the hermit crabs, flip them over (their bodies should be facing you) and hold them under water for about 5 seconds then bring them up. Trust me I have done it before amd they have been fine. If you have 1 or more hermit crabs, you need a 10 gallon tank atleast. If not bigger because they need to have room to run around. Do NOT get those tiny cages the pet stores sell you, thats literally a death trap. You really do need more than one hermit crabs because they are social creatures and can die of lonelyness. But be carefull because if you have a really small hermit crab and then a big one, it could eat the little one. But i have a all different sizes and they have never eaten eachother. Also, dairy products for food are HORRIBLE for hermit crabs. It kills them. So no cheese or milk or whatever. Provide them will some meat sometimes and fresh vegetables and fruit. Thats pretty much the basics, but no, you cant keep them in the same cage. Just think, its almost like putting a elephant and a dolphin together. Two different species, two different areas they come from, two different habitats. Well good luck with everything!
P.s. make sure they have enough shells in their tank incase they want to change.
