I have asked my husband to be honest (long story) I am on the edge of divorce and he knows he needs to be honest for this to work, but he tells stupid lies to make himself look better to others. His lies become a story and then take on a life of themselves. He denies them even when I flat out catch him. Guys what the heck?

Some people have a habit of lying all the time.
Some can see this is wrong and try to stop it; others just think it's OK to do it and that there is nothing wrong with it.
In your husband's case, if you have already told him you dislike his lying and he refuses to stop, then bigger issues are at stake here.
Maybe some counseling or professional help could help him change this unhealthy- and stressful - habit.
But remember---we cannot change others; just ourselves.
Chances are he will continue to act this way, so see if you can live with it or not.

Ask him what is wrong with just being himself. Tell him that he is a good man and that other than the lies, he is very lovable. Tell him that he doesn't have to make up things to make others like him and if he does, then they aren't worth it. Just leave him with that and hopefully it will sink in. Hopefully it will help him see himself in a better way.

Some people don't feel good enough about themselves to be honest. I know someone like that and it's sad because he's a really great guy. I just can't believe what comes out of his mouth.

you are already doing something good by divorcing him. his going to continue to lie to you. let him move on ,and tell those stupid lies to someone else. you deserve to be happy not sad.

by edge of divorce I take it to mean that you are considering that so the best thing to do is to get counseling if he is willing but unless he is willing to stop lying a divorce is the best thing for you.

I know guys that can't get through the day without telling lies. It's in their nature. You can't change him.
