My mom just started reading again and she likes to read classics that she felt that she missed out on, so that is basically every classic. She just read To Kill a Mocking Bird and Fahrenheit 451 (my suggestion) and loved them both. Any other ideas??? This would be a christmas present.

It isn't a classic - yet. But I highly recommend Water for Elephants. It is such a beautifully written book and I bet your Mom would love it. It would make a wonderful read for a snowy winter day.

As for Classics she missed out on, Dickens is also a wintery kind of read. Oliver Twist, Great Expectations.

My Antonia by Willa Cather
Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier
The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald
Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies, The Grapes of Wrath...
Actually, a very good resource would be the Modern Library which contains works from everyone from The Buddha to Mark Twain. Their top 100 (http://www.randomhouse.com/modernlibrary/100bestnovels.html) has a lot of the great novels on it.
