= 80x6 which = 480 characters total. Which if you noticed while posting your question, is around half of the amount that you can post for details. A character can be a letter (a,b,c..), a punctuation symbol (.,;") or a space.
Max words if considering spaces and if each were 5 letters long would equal around 80 words.

This is a sloppy way to present a limit. If it means exactly what it says, then you can type 6 lines and you must keep each line below 80 characters. If it means that you have 6x80 or 480 characters, that means you have to get all your letters, punctuation, returns, and spaces in that limit and they may not accept it if word wrap throws a word onto the 7th lines.
I would recommend using Notepad (in Windows) and typing 123456789 123456789 up to 8 of them, killing word wrap, adjusting the screen width to 80 and then carefully typing to fit on 6 lines.
Note that while the average word length in English is 5, this takes 6 characters because the space must be included in a message. How many words you get depends how big your words are. 6 into 480 is 80, so a lot less words than the person answering before said.

You can use a maximum of six lines in your essay each of them not more than 80 characters long. At an average of five characters per word, I'd say about 240 words in total.

Umm..I THINK that means you are supposed to have 6 lines with 80 letters in each line. That's my guess.
Happy day-after-Black-Friday. :)
