Statistics at the time found that higher speed limits decreases the number of accidents but increases their fatality. However, Clinton did not get rid of 55mph speed limits, he let the states choose. Why? Well, because Republicans in 1994 were elected on a states' right agenda and were supporting this.

Anyway, in terms of highway safety it was considered the right decision at the time and all the experts agreed with it in an era of abundant, cheap oil, significant investments in renewable alternatives, and improved safety features on automobiles. The results of 6 years of Bush have been: oil is scarce and expensive, decreased investments in renewable alternatives, and no major safety developments on automobiles. hmmmmmmmmmm....maybe we should look at the big picture.

Since speed limits are set by states I doubt it. At the time I recall people, primarily those on the right so more oil could be sold, whined that the 55 mile speed limit wasn't working and was too slow.

It wasn't Clinton, it was the Congress who did that, he just signed the form. I hated that 55 MPH speed, people drive slow enough, especially here in Ohio.
