I have read that sometimes a gyno will want to do a rectal exam...
Why? What purpose does it serve, and how common is it to have one done?

Most gynecologists do not do a rectal exam on a young woman unless they suspect that something is wrong or unless the patient asks. When they do a rectal exam (mostly on older women) it is to feel the back of the ovaries and uterus to see if they feel any masses such as a cyst.

In older women the exam must be done annually.

I am 44 years old and have never been ask to be the recipient of this exam.
I wouldn't think it is very common. If it were a hemorrhoid issue I would think the Gynecologist would refer you to a Proctologist.

When they do that, they are searching for hemorrhoids.

I am in my 30s and have only had it happen once
