my old gas stove (we're talking vintage here) keeps burning things, It worked fine when we bought the house but then knob that controlled the temperature fell off, and when we put it back on but and now the inside temperature will rocket to 500 even though it was set at 250. Is there some way to calibrate it, or some website to show me how? This became important after we burnt our turkey to a crisp :(

sounds as though knob is on up side down

take of knob and turn the switch stalk fully anti clock to zero mark.

replace knob with graticle mark at zero.

if worn off tippex on a new one.

now if you turn the knob on you should be back in sync with temp.

if it dont work - get a new cooker or eat out

Did you have any idea so many people would simply throw out a preference? The technology for electric is certainly noteworthy. The ceramic tops are very easy to clean, which is a nice bonus. Gas might cost less, but the stoves typically cost more, but certainly if you have the skills you can control the heating. Think it comes down to how you cook and your resources. If you have gas already going into your house, and you are able to control the flame, and you have the money to buy a gas stove, then that seems like the way to go. If you don't have gas, then it might not be worth the expense, when you can get high performance electric stoves. This is definitely a first world problem.

It sounds like the temp. sensor bulb, (thermocouple), that's attached to the oven gas control on most older ranges, has gone goofy. That would mean that you, at least, need to have that particular part replaced. I'd also recommend getting a new control knob that fits correctly. Both should be available from a good appliance parts dealer. If you're not extremely handy I'd also recommend having a qualified repalr tech do the job.

U DO KNOW U HAVE TO CHECK ON THE BIRD IN THE OVEN AND REBASTE WITH IT OWN JUICES TO GET IT GOLDEN BROWN. THIS USUALLY TAKES HOURS DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THE BIRD.>>????\
IF U TAKE THAT FOOD THERMOMETER THAT U USED ON THE BIRD, U CAN CHECK THE REAL TEMP OF YOUR OVEN/ IT CAN BE CALIBRATED UNDER THE KNOB
