I usually check BBC World News and Al-jazeera. Foreign perspectives are either totally biased or reliably objective.

I usually just try to get information from different sources and them make an educated guess based upon the information available.
I don't know that there is a best way. Someone is always hiding something it seems.

I read 'alternative' publications such as The Economist; Mother Jones and Dissent magazines.

Like Mark I usually look at more than once source. Another good way is by looking at news related blogs. :)
