I have an emachines laptop computer. It has an AMD Athlon processor. It says the processor is X86 Family 6 Model 8 stepping 1 whatever the heck that means. I'm running Windows XP and have 512 MB of memory. I tried installing the AVerTVHD Volar, but it crashes my computer.

That should work on your PC. Try disabling all your startups first before installing the driver of TV tuner to prevent software conflict during installation.
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, ok. Select Startup tab, disable all, apply, ok. PC will restart. Reinstall the driver. Enable startups afterwards in msconfig again.
