For example, if the three fractions are

2/3 + 1/2 + 1/3
then use 6 as the common denominator, you multiply the top of each fraction by the same number as the bottom, that gives
4/6 + 3/6 + 2/6
Then you add the top numbers to get
(4+3+2)/6 = 9/6
That finally gives 3/2, which is 1 and 1/2
